The Symbols of Mandala on Mentally Ill Person

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of the color and pattern of Mandala on mentally ill person.
Methods: This was a descriptive study using the analysis of Coloring Mandala by patients. The subjects were 97 inpatients. The Mandala were analyzed by the method of Fincher(1991). Data was analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0.
Results: The findings of the study were as follows: The highest frequency of the center color of Mandala was Red, and the circle color was white. The number of colors used in Mandala was 5-9, and density of color was medium. 75-100% of participants used the space of the circle. The highest pattern frequency of Mandala was Geomatric. As for connections between chief complaints and circle color, there was differentiation. The red circle color was differentiated by sex, and marital status; yellow by physical disease; white by sex, and admission day; and multi color by religion.
Conclusion: Further studies to analyze subject’s verbal or written data with the combined objective of the Mandala are needed for concrete nursing interventions to enhance a nonverbal communication method.
